How to install Palm on 64bit Windows versions

I know why you're here. You have a very dear Palm operated handheld, you connect it to your PC and it won't synchronize just because the USB connection is not compliant with Windows x64.

I'm not a mind reader... I myself have a Sony Clie handheld palm. It's a nice tool. Reliable, easy to operate and well designed. I've been synchronizing it with my MS Outlook with direct USB connection on my Windows XP operated PC without any problems for long time. But then I decided to upgrade my OS to the 64-bit Windows version just to discover that there is actually no way to synchronize my handheld with my pc using my cable, for the simple reason that there is no 64-bit USB Driver for palms! Could you imagine...

It took me some time and lots of searches on the web just to find out that:

1. many people complained about that problem.

2. very few workarounds were suggested by other users.

I've tried those workarounds without any success.

Eventually I've come up with the simplest solution: I bought an IR Dongle on eBay. Yes, it's that simple guys. Stop wasting time trying to find a driver that does not exist and don't take your pc to the lab and burn your cash. The solution is so simple, it's very cheap, and it's even more comfortable then using the direct cable connection! You see, the problem is not about software compatibility. "Palm Desktop" works fine on 64-bit platform. The only problem is that there are no 64-bit drivers for the USB cable.

Just make sure your handheld has Infra Red interface built in before you buy the dongle. Most Older models have that embedded. Newer models got Bluetooth functionality which can also be used for synchronization using a Bluetooth Dongle. You also need to make sure the dongle you buy is supported by your operating system or comes with the apropriate drivers. (When you order from an ebay seller you can use the "contact the seller" option before placing your order and email them to confirm your OS will be able to make use of their product).

Search eBay for IR Dongle: Infra red Dongle on eBay.

Search eBay for Bluetooth Dongle: Bluetooth Dongle on eBay.

Good Luck!  :)

Can you better explain what this dongle is and howyou use it. Sorry I'm not a tech person...but I can learn.

Dongle

Morashik Editor

It's a small device that plugs into a USB port on your pc. It looks like "Disk on Key" if you know what I mean... You can follow the link supplied in the post to see some models sold on ebay stores. The dongle, when connected to a pc, functions as a transceiver that makes wireless communication possible with a compliant device. So if your handheld supports Bluetooth, a Bluetooth dongle will make it possible for your handheld to communicate with your pc. If it supports Infra-red (older models) an IR dongle will enable communication between the handheld and the pc. Bottom line; the dongle is used to create wireless connections between devices. After the connection is established, the synchronization process is the same as with a cable link.

How is the connection established after inserting the dongle into the USB port? As you can see I am not a "techie" either.

You select your desired connection in your palm. It's in the HotSync screen under the hotsync icon.

Say it was USB... you change it to Bluetooth or Infrared, depending on your dongle type. The rest is the same, so simple.

I ordered and received my IR dongle (from Hong Kong). It came with a 3" CD for installing a driver. My computer wont open the files on the CD. It appears these files are for Windows 98 and ME and 2000. Any idea where I go from here? Thanks for your help!

I too am seeking the answer to this question. I can't locate the drivers for the IR dongle for Win Vista?
